frequently asked questions (faqs)

general questions

Q: OK, what's this chopping thing?

A: The Designer's Chop Shop is a service for web designers and developers who have a design laid out in Photoshop but can't, don't want to, or have no time to code the XHTML/CSS themselves. After receiving the PSD file, we chop up those layers into individual images and proceed with coding. We are usually subcontracted to quickly fill this void and provide our clients with W3C compliant semantic markup.

Q: I've heard of slicing, but not chopping. What's the difference?

A: The word, really. Chopping is so much more fun sounding than slicing.

Q: How do I get started?

A: Glad you asked. It's simple, you use the order form below to upload your files and send us detailed instructions. After we receive your files, usually the same day, we will review them to make sure everything is in order. If you're requesting a quote, make sure you let us know. Once we verify everything, we will send you an invoice. Once you pay 50% of the total amount via PayPal, the clock starts and we'll begin the chopping process.

Q: What are your rates?

A: Our rates vary depending on the specifics of the project, but for the most part they can be broken down into two main categories:

  • 1 day turnaround: $320+
  • 3 day turnaround: $175+

That's for one page. Each additional page goes for $65 as long as it's pretty similar to the first. If it's not, you can contact us for a quote.

Q: Do you guarantee your turnaround times?

A: You bet. The timer starts once you've made your deposit. We guarantee our turnaround times pending change requests or required details from you. In other words, you're guaranteed to receive a chop of what you originally sent us if you never request a change or give us all the details we ask for. If you want the document(s) revised, it might take a bit longer.

Q: I'm looking to have a web site designed, is that something you guys do?

A: Nope, but we're partnered with Orpheux Design. That's what they're great at, so checking them out would definitely benefit you. We refer people who want a web site designed, and they refer designers who want it coded. It's a mutual relationship that benefit$ both companie$.

Q: What are your normal business hours?

A: Monday through Friday, 9-6, and Saturday 10-3. We respond to e-mails on Sundays.

payment questions

Q: What payment methods do you accept?

A: We only accept PayPal, and our prices are in USD. It's pretty much the best payment method available for this sort of transaction. It chops the competition apart... or something.

Q: When and how do I pay? Are you going to send a muscular man to collect?

A: We currently do not employ any muscular men. As far as payment, it's simple. Once your order checks out, we send you an invoice and a link pay us via PayPal. At that time, you will pay 50% of the total cost and the remaining balance will be payed after completion of the project. Once you're OK with it, you pay the rest and we'll deliver your chops right away.

Q: I've decided you guys seem legit and I want to give you money. What files do you want me to send?

A: First off, thanks. We prefer the files to be in PSD format, because it's an acronym for Puppies Smell Delightful, and they're pretty common and easy to work with. We also accept all layered Photoshop, Illustrator, and Freehand files. Here is what you should include with the source file:

  • Custom fonts, if necessary
  • Rollover states, if necessary
  • Details on specific element bahaviors

Q: I've changed my mind after paying you guys, can I get a refund?

A: Sorry, we don't offer refunds. If you aren't satisfied after making the 50% deposit and reviewing your page we won't charge the rest.

Q: Can you guys add in some Javascript, or maybe some AJAX?

A: Sure, for a nominal fee. Same applies for blog/shopping cart integration. Tell us about it in your order form and we'll quote you a price.

other questions

Q: Will your code work with IE6? Do you use hacks for IE6?

A: Your code is tested on IE6/7, Firefox, and Opera for Windows as well as Safari, Firefox, and Camino on Mac. We'll make it work. As far as hacks go, we'll use them only if you want them.

Q: I don't want my clients to know I've hired a subcontractor. Can I treat you like a mistress and just keep this little relationship between us?

A: We can definitely keep this private. No information will be released to anyone, and no connection to The Designer's Chop Shop will appear in the code. We do prefer that you don't treat us like a mistress, though.

Q: We have a question you didn't answer, can we contact you without ordering?

A: Absolutely. Use the contact form in the about section below, or alternatively you can simply e-mail us.

chop

[chop] -noun
  1. to make or prepare for use by cutting
  2. quality, class, or grade: a web site of the first chop

Who are you guys?

The Designer's Chop Shop is a service started in 2007 that caters to designers who want to focus more on the actual design process and not have to code. Many times web designers have their work cut out for them when too many clients are banging on their door. Our service, as sub-contractors, eases those issues.

Currently we're staffed by a small group--two of us, in fact. We are partnered with Orpheux Design, a company that deals with designing and development. If it's design you're after, speak to them and tell 'em the choppers sent you.

We strive to give the best service possible. All our code is 100% valid XHTML Strict/Transitional and our CSS follows suit as well. Our turnaround time is guaranteed, and we can take care of just about everything you throw at us. We also include technical support for 5 business days after completing your project. If you have any doubts, speak to us first for information or a quick quote. Give us as much detail as possible so we can better understand what you need.

Send us an e-mail, chop chop!

Finally, you're here.

It's simple. Fill out the form, upload your file, send it over. We'll review everything, and if all is well, you will receive a confirmation e-mail and an invoice within 24 hours. Once you pay the 50%, we start chopping.

If you still have questions before ordering, just drop us an e-mail using the form in the about section above.

Notice:

For the time being we are only accepting orders through e-mail. We've had a few issues with abuse on our upload form, so we're working on fixing that.

In the meantime, just e-mail us with your file(s) attached. Include information on how many pages you need, your turnaround time (1 or 3 days), and every other detail you can think of.
